Along with F.O. shoes and F.O. money, there is F.O. wine.
An exciting, innovative region, doing its own thing, is Languedoc-Roussillon in the south of France.
Diverse terroir, affordable land, a favourable grape growing climate along with interesting indigenous varieties, some of great age, are all factors attracting many different nationalities to the area.
One such group calls themselves the Outsiders defining their philosophy as ‘..a different perspective, which sometimes translates as doing things differently’.
Two of the engaging female producers within the group are Chateau Combebelle, in the small, highly regarded Saint Chinian appellation (wines available from their website) and Chateau Rives-Blanques in Limoux.
Limoux is also a high quality and underrated appellation, producing fantastic value sparkling and still wines from Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Mauzac. All Rives-Blanques wines are lovely and highly recommended. Their wines, including the deliciously fresh, Le Limoux, are available from Great Western Wines.
Interesting white wines from Outsiders include Domaine Treloar, La Terre Promise, a Grenache Gris, Macabeu, Carignan Blanc blend, available from Cambridge Wine Merchants and Domaine Sainte Rose, La Nuit Blanche, Roussanne, available at Majestic.
Other Outsiders are Clos du Gravillas, Chateau d’Angles, Domaine Turner Pageot, Domaine Sainte Croix, Domaine de Saumarez and Domaine de Cebene.
